• SCIENTIFIC SCOPE

    The aim of the CRCL International Cancer Symposium is to address fundamental issues of cancer biology from the molecular and biochemical determinants of cancer initiation and dissemination, to the impact of the tumour microenvironment and immunity, and to emphasise synergy between basic, clinical, and translational research. This meeting will also address how tumour cell plasticity contributes to enhanced tumour heterogeneity, sustained metastatic dissemination and escape from conventional and targeted therapies.
  • SYMPOSIUM HIGHLIGHTS

    Based on the scientific scope of the meeting, the following thematic sessions are planned:
     
    Session 1 : Cancer Cell Plasticity
    Intra-tumor heterogeneity and cancer cell plasticity are key aspects of tumor development, with tremendous clinical consequences, by supporting cancer relapse and escape from therapies. Intra-tumor heterogeneity arises not only from genetics but also from other sources such as epigenetics, environmental factors, metabolism and consecutive signaling pathways. Cellular plasticity allows identity and phenotypical changes, thus providing adaptability and survival capacities to cancer cells, and favoring tumor initiation and development.
    This session will focus on the role of cancer cell plasticity and intra-tumoral heterogeneity in the adaptation of cancer stem cells and cancer cells to the selective pressure occurring during tumour initiation and progression from key players in the field.
     
    Session 2 : Immunity and Virus in Cancer
    Largely overlooked in the last few decades, the study of both the immune system and viral infections are now central in cancer investigations. Clinicians and researchers interested in the immunology of cancer, immunotherapy and oncoviral infections will present and discuss the latest scientific advances. This session will cover molecular mechanisms of infection and cancer with a particular focus on virus-host cell interactions, metabolism, immunosurveillance and immune evasion. Recent progress in immunotherapy will also be highlighted, with a particular interest in resistance processes to such innovative cancer treatments.
     
    Session 3 - Tumor Microenvironment
    Tumors are integrated tissues composed of many different compartments, among which cancer-associated fibroblasts, the extracellular matrix, vascular and immune cells. Increasing evidences indicate that all these components, referred to as the microenvironment, play an active role in different aspects of cancer such as initiation, progression and resistance. Deciphering the reciprocal interactions between these different elements, involving inflammation, angiogenesis, metabolism and many more processes, is a key step toward understanding cancer ecology and dynamic and will help developing new therapeutic innovations. This session will cover several topics in this field, including events in carcinogenesis involving a contribution of the microenvironment, stress responses, signaling pathways in stroma and cancer cells as well as the translational impact of targeting the microenvironment.
     
    Session 4 : Innovative Therapies
    Decades of research into the molecular and cellular nature of cancer have enabled the development of a new generation of targeted therapeutics. These are already showing efficacy in replacing or augmenting traditional chemo- and radiotherapies. However, many challenges to their broad use remain, including the diversity of cancer cell drug susceptibility, the complexity of the tumour microenvironment and acquired drug resistance. This section will present cutting edge efforts in overcoming these challenges through the development of new drugs, biomarkers, and innovative therapeutic approaches such as augmentation of the anti-cancer immune response.
     

    For each session, a prestigious panel of international speakers will be invited.
